The Utica Shale remains a bit of an enigma for drillers and investors alike. Some see it as the next big thing, while others are cautiously backing away. One thing is for sure: For many drillers, the Utica Shale isn't living up to the original sky-highexpectations, especially for oil content.
The lack of oil is one of reasons why bothChesapeake Energy (NYSE: CHK ) and Devon Energy (NYSE: DVN ) are planning on selling their Utica assets after initially building a sizable presence. Chesapeake, which is the largest Utica leaseholder, just put around 100,000 of its acres up for sale. While that's a small portion of its overall acreage in the play it is worth noting because it marks a continued trend from the company, which also sold a large stake in the Utica last year to Total.
Devon is taking things one step further; it's attempting to unload the rest of its Utica acreage, after putting a portion of its acres into a joint-venture package with Sinopec last year. Devon sees higher returns in other plays within its acreage, particularlyin the Canadian oil sands and Permian Basin.

A savior in the far north?
If there's one way out of this trouble for Nabors, it could be in Alaska's new tax policy for oil and gas production in the state. On the company's most recent conference call, Nabors CEO Anthony Petrello stated that the change in tax policy will have a significant impact on the company's earnings over the next couple of years. Certainly, the move to change taxes in the state has exploration and production companies reconsidering their position in the state. ConocoPhillips (NYSE: COP ) recently announced that it sees modest gains in Alaska production thanks to these rules just days after the company announced that it would be suspending offshore drilling operations for the foreseeable future. - [By Brian Stoffel]
Looking to make an addition to his portfolio from the energy sector, Nathan considered Vermillion, Canadian oil-sands specialist Suncor Energy (NYSE: SU ) , and global oil and natural gas giant ConocoPhillips (NYSE: COP ) . Though Nathan believes all three are exceptional values right now, Vermillion was the pick for his real-money portfolio.

Yes, say the folks at Barclays. They took a long, hard look at integrated oil companies like Chevron (CVX) and ConocoPhillips (COP)–but only one came away with a downgrade: ExxonMobil (XOM).

For Imperial Oil (IMO), it good to have friends in high places. In this case, wee talking about Exxon (XOM) 70% stake in the Canadian integrated oil firm. That relationship has provided plenty of capital and technological know-how to produce plenty of crude oil and natural gas via conventional and unconventional means.

Ten of Exxon major projects are expected to begin pumping energy throughout this year. These include expansions of Imperial Oil (IMO) oil sands production in Canada, new deepwater wells in the Gulf of Mexico as well as finally seeing production from its partnership in Russia. XOM will start producing oil from the largest offshore oil and gas platform in that nation within a few months. These projects will add about 300,000 barrels per oil equivalent per day to Exxon production.

We downgrade ExxonMobil to Underweight from Equal Weight primarily due to its relative valuation. The shares are currently trading at a 9% premium to its NAV compared to the group average discount of 17%. Although we have modestly increased our price target to $105 from $100 and set it above its NAV estimate to give credit to the company seemingly conservative non-proved resource estimate, we believe the potential upside is limited compared to other names in our coverage. We think the stock will continue to face relative headwinds concerning the lack of meaningful near-term production growth and our belief of a relatively steady high oil price environment. We recommend switching from ExxonMobil to ConocoPhillips, Imperial Oil (IMO), or Suncor. That said, ExxonMobil will likely outperform the group in the event of any unexpected significant negative macro developments given its long held afe havenstatus.

Advisors' Opinion:- [By John Licata]
Weatherford International (NYSE: WFT ) is going through an identity crisis of sorts that I'm surprised hasn't raised some legal red flags or caused more concern on Wall Street. The company maintains its main operational office in Houston, was formerly legally based in Bermuda, moved to Switzerland in 2009, and now seeks the greener pastures of Ireland to operate at lower costs and further attract top talent. What's going on here? Is Weatherford gaming the system, oris itpossibly hiding something? One thing's for sure, this is perfectly legal but something sure doesn't smell right since tax shelters are increasingly being vilified in political circles here in theUnited States. Ireland has also been under pressure to makeits tax structures harder to abuse by multinational corporations.
