It has been good being a shareholder of major oil firms like ConocoPhillips (NYSE: COP), Exxon Mobil (NYSE: XOM), Occidental Petroleum (NYSE: OXY) and many others.
The bull market has lifted the equity prices higher, and oil's new role as a safe haven asset has made the companies even more valuable. The dividend income, traditionally strong as it is for the sector, has been even more rewarding. This has been especially true for ConocoPhillips, which is up more than 23 percent for 2014.

Advisors' Opinion:- [By Sean Williams]
A really intriguing deal was actually forged by refiner Phillips 66 (NYSE: PSX ) , which struck a five-year deal to ship 50,000 barrels per day of Bakken refined oil to New Jersey. For a refiner that relies on nimbleness and the ability to adapt production based on spreads and demand, this is a risky gamble that WTI will remain cheaper than Brent for quite a long period of time. It could wind up being a gamble that could backfire.

Yesterday, refiners like Phillips 66 (PSX) and Holly Frontier (HFC) got hammered after the so-called spread between US and European oil benchmarks narrowed to the tightest level since last October. What should investors do now?
Bloomberg NewsPhillips 66 fell 2.6% yesterday, while Holly Frontier dropped 3.1%, Tesoro (TSO) declined 1.4%, Western Refining (WNR) plunged 4.3% and Delek US (DK) finished off 5.2%.
Credit Suisse analyst Edward Westlake and team explain aren’t feeling optimistic about the refiners:
We believe the local peak of Gulf Coast earnings seems behind us. Yes, there could be some widening in LLS in March/April given the transfer of inventory from Cushing to the Gulf, but as East of Rockies refineries ramp up for peak gasoline demand, summer crude spreads should remain tight. High crude prices will depress the margins on secondary products and retail. That is not to say earnings will disappoint hugely. Distillate has been helped by the cold winter, Maya remains wide, Mid-Cush has been wide. Its more that upside risks to earnings have diminished.
Westlake offered some thoughts on individual stocks, as well. Western Refining, which had its target price raised to $48 from $46, and Phillips 66 should benefit from other businesses–Western Refining, for one, has large logistic and chemical operations–while Tesoro could benefit from being recognized as a “Gulf Coast Refiner.” Westlake also raised his price target on Holly Frontier to $57 from $54. Delek US, however, needs to show signs of earnings improvement before its worth buying, Westlake notes.
Shares of Western Refining, which released earnings yesterday, have dropped 2.9% to $36.39, while Phillips 66 has ticked up 0.2% to $74.91, Tesoro has gained 1% to $51.24, Holly Frontier has fallen 0.4% to $45.43 and Delek US has fallen 4.3% to $27.59.

(SandRidge) in 67 producing horizontal wells, including 13 wells, which are awaiting completion (the Producing Wells), in the Mississippian formation in northern Oklahoma and southern Kansas, and overriding royalty interests in 206 horizontal development wells (The Development Wells) to be drilled in the Mississippian formation (the Development Wells) on properties within an Area of Mutual Interest (the AMI). SandRidge is an independent oil and natural gas company engaged in the development and production activities related to the exploitation of its holdings in West Texas and the Mid-Continent area of Oklahoma and Kansas. The AMI, which is limited to the Mississippian formation, consists of approximately 81,200 gross acres (53,000 net acres) held by SandRidge. The Bank of New York Mellon Trust Company, N.A. is trustee (the Trustee), and The Corporation Trust Company is a Delaware Trustee (the Delaware Trustee).
The Mississippian formation is encountered at depths between approximately 4,000 feet and 7,000 feet and lies between the Pennsylvanian-aged Morrow formation and the Devonian-aged Woodford Shale formation. Effective as of January 1, 2012, the royalty interests was conveyed from SandRidge's interest in the Producing Wells and the Development Wells. The royalty interest in the Producing Wells (the PDP Royalty Interest) entitles the trust to receive 80% of the proceeds from the sale of production of oil and natural gas attributable to SandRidge's net revenue interest in the Producing Wells. The royalty interest in the Development Wells (the Development Royalty Interest) entitles the trust to receive 70% of the proceeds from the sale of oil and natural gas production attributable to SandRidge's net revenue interest in the Development Wells.
As of December 31, 2011, the total proved reserves estimated to be attributable to t! he trust were 26.1 million barrels of oil equivalent. This amount includes 10.2 million barrels of oil equivalent attributable to the PDP Royalty Interest and 15.9 million barrels of oil equivalent attributable to the Development Royalty Interest. The proved reserves consist of 46.8% oil and 53.2% natural gas. In addition, as of December 31, 2011, there were 9.8 million barrels of oil equivalent of probable reserves estimated to be attributable to the trust, all of which were attributable to the Development Royalty Interest. SandRidge will retain 20% of the proceeds from the sale of oil and natural gas attributable to its net revenue interest in the Producing Wells, as well as 30% of the proceeds from the sale of future production attributable to its net revenue interest in the Development Wells. SandRidge initially will own 48.2% of the trust units. SandRidge operates 79% of the Producing Wells. The completed Producing Wells and 121 other Mississippian wells outside of the AMI that have been completed by SandRidge have an average perforated length of approximately 4,200 feet. SandRidge Exploration and Production, LLC (SandRidge E&P), a wholly owned subsidiary of SandRidge, will grant to the trust a lien on its interests in the AMI.
The Underlying Properties are located in Noble, Kay, Alfalfa, Grant and Woods counties in northern Oklahoma and Harper, Comanche, Sumner and Barber counties in southern Kansas in the Mississippian formation, which is an expansive carbonate hydrocarbon system located on the Anadarko Shelf. As of December 31, 2011, there were approximately 43 horizontal rigs drilling in the formation, with 19 of those rigs drilling for SandRidge. As of December 31, 2011, SandRidge had approximately 1.5 million net acres leased in the Mississippian formation in north! ern Oklah! oma and Kansas.
Advisors' Opinion:- [By Dan Caplinger]
SandRidge has made a huge bet on the Mississippian Lime shale play, especially after selling off its Permian Basin assets late last year. Unfortunately, that bet hasn't paid off well for shareholders, as the company saw its spun-off royalty trusts SandRidge Mississippian Trust I (NYSE: SDT ) and SandRidge Mississippian Trust II (NYSE: SDR ) fail to meet their projections for distribution amounts during the first quarter. The main problem has been that wells in the Mississippian Lime have produced more natural gas than expected, and even with a slight rebound in gas prices, it still doesn't produce adequate margins compared to oil and natural-gas liquids.
- [By Adam Galas]
As pointed out by my colleague Matt DiLallo in this article comparing SandRidge Energy (NYSE: SD ) and SandRidge Mississippian Trust II (NYSE: SDR ) , SandRidge Energy's trusts were established as mere financing vehicles for the parent company to invest in its own drilling program. For example, SandRidge Energy has plans to invest $1.55 billion annually in its Mississippi lime assets through 2016 in order to grow production by 20%-25% annually (in spite of expected decline rates of 35% in 2014, 20% in 2015, and 15% in 2016).
- [By Matt DiLallo]
The problem here is that SandRidge has beendependenton asset sales and its running out of assets to sell. In addition to the Permian sale, SandRidge has now taken three royalty trusts public. One consisting of Permian Basin assets, SandRidge Permian Trust (NYSE: PER ) and two consisting of Mississippian assets, SandRidge Mississippian Trust I (NYSE: SDT ) and SandRidge Mississippian Trust II (NYSE: SDR ) . While SandRidge still owns a portion of each trust, it likely will continue to sell off its ownership stake in each trust as well as other assets it still owns. At some point SandRidge will need to live within its oil and gas cash flows, otherwise, its not worth owning.

Notable foreign joint ventures
The practice has been quite common among foreign companies engaging in joint ventures with U.S. firms. For instance, the use of a drilling carry was a feature of Chesapeake Energy's (NYSE: CHK ) transaction with China's largest energy company, CNOOC (NYSE: CEO ) , back in 2010, though it was noticeably absent from its most recent joint venture agreement with Sinopec (NYSE: SHI ) .

In addition, we recommend buying shares in Brazilian energy giant Petroleo Brasileiro Petrobras S.A. (PBR.A).

Advisors' Opinion:- [By Rick Munarriz]
Briefly in the news
Just in case you weren't armed with enough anecdotal evidence that the housing industry is back, revenue at leading real estate website Zillow (NASDAQ: Z ) climbed 71% in its latest quarter. Zillow became the first company to take questions on Twitter during its earnings call, though most of those were from Wall Street analysts. Shares of Dendreon (NASDAQ: DNDN ) tumbled 15% on Thursday after the company posted an unexpected drop in sales of its flagship prostate cancer treatment. A couple of analysts moved to downgrade Dendreon on the report. Heckmann (NYSE: NES ) was downgraded by Global Hunter Securities after posting a wider quarterly loss than Wall Street was expecting. Revenue also came in a bit light. On the beat side, Tesla Motors (NASDAQ: TSLA ) posted a quarterly profit that was four times larger than analysts were projecting. Tesla CEO Elon Musk also conceded that the company is exploring technology for self-driving cars.

Clean up with this stock
Topping my list of best stocks to buy for a future buyout is Nuverra Environmental Solutions (NYSE: NES ) . Founder Richard Heckmann and CEO Mark Johnsrud have both built and sold companies in their past, which is one reason I think Nuverra's future likely ends with it being sold. That being said, a sale is likely years away as the management team is just beginning to build something great. - [By Rich Duprey]
Environmentalists have opposed fracking, however, accusing the procedure of causing everything from groundwater contamination to flaming faucets and earthquakes. Spurred on by these activists, the EPA began conducting tests to prove it was fracking behind drinking water contamination, as the theory was that fracking fluids were seeping into the aquifers. Yet asNuverra Environmental Solutions (NYSE: NES ) explained, these fluids are pumped into wells thousands of feet below the ground, far below the aquifers, and the fluids seep down, not up. Nuverra is one of the leading suppliers of water and fluids-management services used in fracking for the oil and gas industry.
