Top 5 Industrial Conglomerate Stocks To Buy For 2014

The European Central Bank could make an important decision soon. Pricing data in the European Union has been coming in weak, hitting the lowest level in more than four years. This adds pressure to ECB President Mario Draghi, who might start looking for ways to counter the deflationary threat in the region. What can he do? Two things: cut interest rates and/or start a round of quantitative easing to boost activity levels and push prices up. During last week's monthly meeting, the ECB left its policies unchanged, but calls for action are mounting, and Draghi says measures including asset purchases are on the table.

With the U.S. Federal Reserve winding down its quantitative-easing program and the Japanese central bank finishing its strong QE of 2013, it might be Europe's turn to try a more aggressive policy to drive its economy. After all, the austerity measures designed to curtail the unsustainable deficit spending kept demand soft in the region and did not solve its problems.

How could this impact European assets?
Normally, a drop in interest rates and expansive monetary policies are positive for capital markets. In Japan, for example, the Nikkei grew more than 60% last year, while the U.S.' S&P 500 gained 28%.

For a closer look at how Europe is doing, consider the best-known broad European index ETF, Vanguard European Stock Index (NYSEMKT: VGK  ) . This fund invests in large- and mid-cap stocks based in 17 developed European markets, representing most of the investable market. Many of the fund's largest holdings are quality multinational names such as Nestle (NASDAQOTH: NSRGY  ) , Royal Dutch Shell, Roche, and HSBC (NYSE: HSBC  ) . But if you consider weight by country, the U.K. comes first with 33%, followed by Switzerland with 14% and France with 14%.

Recently, however, a new company, Implant Sciences Corporation (IMSC.PK) received approval from the TSA to begin selling their ETD equipment to airport security professionals. This approval has opened the door for IMSC to begin taking some market share away from the more established players in the US and beyond.

Marking the Way for Alzheimer's Drugs

Editor's note: An earlier version of this article incorrectly stated that Eli Lilly purchased two companies from Siemens. The actual transaction was for two tracers used in detecting tau tangles. The video also misidentifies a collaboration between Eli Lilly and General Electric for similar diagnostic products. GE Healthcare is developing a tau tangle imaging test that is independent of Eli Lilly. The Fool regrets the error.

In this video, health care analyst David Williamson discusses Eli Lilly's  (NYSE: LLY  )  recent purchase of two imaging tracers from German conglomerate Siemens. The big pharma currently has Amyvid approved, which detects amyloid brain plaques. Like Amyvid, Eli Lilly is hoping that these tau tangle diagnostics will help both with detection and potentially serve as markers for treatment. Watch and find out how the treatment for Alzheimer's disease is evolving and some potentially groundbreaking drugs in the pipeline.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Geoff Gannon] company that is in two different businesses.

It has a golf course business that is not profitable but has a lot of assets. And then it has a waste management business that is profitable. But doesn't have a lot of assets.

This is the sort of situation where I would pay a lot of attention to the balance sheet. You aren't really double counting in a stock like this. The assets are not producing the earnings. They could be separated from the business.

Unfortunately, this is a controlled company. And not a good activist target.

But you will find situations like Gyrodyne (GYRO) and Syms (SYMSQ) where at some point the company's entire value really depended on its balance sheet.

Obv! iously when looking at things like real estate you don't go by what it says on the balance sheet. You try to find a note on depreciation that breaks out land, buildings, etc. And gives information about how the company depreciates its property.

And – of course – you look at the "Properties" item in the 10-K. In the U.S., you then use the information you've gathered to check county land records and things like that for more information about the property.

    Generally, you want to:

To the layperson, the 802.11ac standard means absolutely nothing, even if that individual is using that particular technology. As such, there's no apparent difference between the networking technology offered by the likes of Ubiquiti Networks (NASDAQ:UBNT), Cisco Systems, Inc. (NASDAQ:CSCO), Aruba Networks, Inc. (NASDAQ:ARUN), and most other networking companies. To industry insiders who understand why 802.11ac is an important step-up in the world of wireless networking though, they're apt to have also noticed ARUN has more effectively taken advantage of this technology paradigm shift than peers like UBNT and slower-moving CSCO have. Investors would be wise to take notice too.

Hot Defensive Companies To Watch For 2014

NEW YORK (TheStreet) -- Earnings should be a key driver of any fundamental valuation. This week, a large number of companies will be releasing their quarterly earnings results. Here are three companies found to be undervalued by the ModernGraham valuation model and suitable for either the defensive investor (one who is not willing to undertake substantial research) or the enterprising investor (one who is willing to undertake substantial research).

Freeport-McMoRan Copper & Gold (FCX) is set to release its earnings premarket Thursday, and according to its latest ModernGraham valuation, the company does not pass the requirements of the defensive investor, as it has not consistently paid dividends over the last 10 years, and it has not shown earnings stability over the last 10 years. But it does pass the requirements of the enterprising investor, though it has a higher level of debt relative to current assets than the investor type likes to see.

From a valuation perspective, the ModernGraham valuation is affected significantly by the large earnings loss in 2008, which has caused the EPSmg (normalized earnings) -- EPSmg is a 5 year weighted average of the annual earnings per share figures -- figure for 2009 to be very low in relation to 2013. As it stands, the EPSmg have grown from  a loss of $1.67 to a gain of $3.48, indicating a high level of growth that would appear to significantly outpace the market's implied estimate of 0.45% earnings growth. This has led the model to return an intrinsic value estimate that is well above the market price, and the overall result that the company is undervalued is supported by the valuation based on only 3% growth. If the company can demonstrate earnings greater than cents for the first quarter, this valuation should be even better.

Getty Images One of the joys we have as parents is teaching our three kids about money. With the oldest being just 6, a big part of that revolves around her piggy bank. Whenever she gets a small amount of money, it goes in there, and we talk with her about the importance of saving, giving, and having some to spend on things she wants, which is usually along the lines of a gumball. With a piggy bank, you put money in and take it out. It's a fairly simple tool, and it's great for what it's used for. A 401(k), on the other hand, is a great tool to save for retirement. But increasingly, 401(k)s are being used as something they aren't -– piggy banks. Startling Statistics Recent studies show that Americans are increasingly pilfering from their 401(k) accounts. With the economy being the way it has been since the financial crisis, that's understandable on one level, but the choice can put your retirement plans on a slippery slope. According to the IRS, $57 billion was withdrawn prematurely from 401(k) accounts in 2011 -- up 37 percent in inflation-adjusted dollars from 2003. You could argue that if a person needed the money to survive, then an early withdrawal from a 401(k), even with the tax penalty, is better than other options. That would be right -- to a point. The most disconcerting number, in my opinion, is that younger individuals are withdrawing the most. According to a Fidelity (FNF) study, nearly 40 percent of workers between 20 and 39 are cashing out their 401(k) plans when they change jobs. There could be many reasons for this, but the Fidelity study points out that many don't see the need to roll over their old 401(k)s when the amount being considered is "only" several thousand dollars or a little more. Add that to those people who take out 401(k) loans to fund such things as real estate purchases, and it paints a worrisome picture. The Real Purpose of a 401(k) To a degree that it hasn't for decades, the burden of retirement planning now fall

Getty Images Bitcoin made headlines last year when the value of all outstanding pieces of the electronic currency reached nearly $10 billion. It's not just speculators drawn to the new currency. Many businesses are also attempting to cash in on this growth: Several public companies, including Zynga (ZNGA) and Overstock.com (OSTK), accept Bitcoins as a form of payment. Venture capitalist Marc Andreessen's firm has invested nearly $50 million in Bitcoin-related ventures, and it is looking to invest even more. And the Winklevoss twins -- who notoriously accused Facebook's (FB) Mark Zuckerberg of stealing their idea -- have been "in dialogue" with the SEC about opening the first Bitcoin exchange-traded fund, according to Bloomberg. Yet a new survey from TheStreet.com (TST) reveals that 76 percent of consumers are not familiar with Bitcoin -- and 79 percent would never consider owning a currency like it. Does this signal opportunity for savvy investors? Or is this a fad you'd be wise to avoid? The Basics of Bitcoin Bitcoin is a completely unregulated form of currency developed by an anonymous Japanese programmer (according to some apocryphal claims) as a completely digital, peer-to-peer payment system that is independent of national currencies (which, Bitcoin users argue, are all subject to the riskiness of the underlying country). Bitcoins are rewarded throughout the day to a "Bitcoin miner" whose computer solves a series of algorithms quicker than other miners. The puzzles become more difficult over time, so the calculations take longer and the computations require more computing power. There will eventually be a total of 21 million Bitcoins (12.4 million are in circulation today) and we won't reach the point that they are effectively "mined out" until 2040. The value of a Bitcoin is supposed to be market-driven, meaning they're worth whatever the two parties in a transaction value them as. For example, in one of the original Bitcoin transactions, a "mi

Wall Street This Week: The Magic's a Bit Iffy for Harry Potter

Top Clean Energy Companies To Buy For 2015

2007 Film Preview Murray Close, Warner Bros./AP From a major banking institution kicking off the new earnings season to the most-anticipated theme park debut of the year staging its grand opening, here are some things that will help shape the week that lies ahead on Wall Street. Monday -- Food for Thought The market's going to get off to a slow start on the news front. That's not a surprise given that it was closed Friday for Independence Day. One company that will be in the news on Monday is food and industrial products maker Penford (PENX). Penford's wide range of products include food ingredients, pet and animal products, sustainable bioproducts, starches for paper and packaging products and biofuels. Analysts see Penford earning 21 cents a share, but keep in mind that it has come up short against Wall Street expectations in each of the three previous quarters. Tuesday -- Harry Potter Central Florida will be a bit busier than usual on Tuesday when Comcast's (CMCSK) Universal Orlando has its grand opening of the new Diagon Alley expansion to The Wizarding World of Harry Potter. It's been a rough start. July 8 wasn't the opening date that the park originally wanted, judging by the fact that it had "The Tonight Show" and "Today" run weeklong tie-ins a few weeks ago. Conveniently for Comcast, it owns both the Universal theme parks and NBC. However, with the expansion's indoor coaster proving unreliable -- and even Universal pass holders being denied early access to attractions outside of the new Hogwarts Express train ride -- it could be an interesting debut. The crowds should be huge, the expectations lofty. Wednesday -- Mopping Up WD-40 (WDFC) reports on Wednesday afternoon. This is the company behind the multi-use lubricant. It also offers industrial cleaners, toilet sanitizers and other compounds. WD-40 didn't work out for its shareholders last time out. It posted better than expected 9 percent growth in revenue, but earnings fell just short of expectations. WD-40's guidance for all of 2014 -- calling for earnings of $40.5 million to $42.8 million on $383 million to $398 million in revenue didn't impress the market. Three months later we'll see if it's going to revise those targets higher or lower. Thursday -- A Dollar Saved Family Dollar (FDO) reports on Thursday. The market was planning on Family Dollar merging with Dollar General (DG) -- a move that would unite two leaders of deep discount retail -- but that doesn't seem likely after Dollar General's CEO announced his resignation late last month. This will make Family Dollar's report even more interesting. It probably doesn't help that it has missed Wall Street's income forecasts in back-to-back quarters heading into Thursday's report. Friday -- Can You Bank on It? Earnings season doesn't truly kick in until later in July, but banking giants are some of the first companies to report on the quarters ending in June. They're bankers. They have to be quick with the bean counting. Wells Fargo (WFC) reports on Friday morning, symbolically kicking off the second quarter earnings season that will heat up in the coming weeks. The financial service industry has benefited from the housing boom that's been ignited in part by low loan rates, but the downside to that is that customers aren't in a hurry to open savings and interest-bearing checking accounts in that kind of climate.
