Advisors' Opinion:- [By Seth Jayson]
Margins matter. The more Materion (NYSE: MTRN ) keeps of each buck it earns in revenue, the more money it has to invest in growth, fund new strategic plans, or (gasp!) distribute to shareholders. Healthy margins often separate pretenders from the best stocks in the market. That's why we check up on margins at least once a quarter in this series. I'm looking for the absolute numbers, so I can compare them to current and potential competitors, and any trend that may tell me how strong Materion's competitive position could be.

Advisors' Opinion:- [By Ben Levisohn]
My grandfather owned a La-Z-Boy (LZB), and yours probably did too. But there’s nothing old-fashioned about its stock’s performance today following its earnings release. Going up never goes out of style.
AFPMarketWatch has the details on La-Z-Boy’s results:
For the quarter ended Oct. 26, La-Z-Boy posted a profit of $16.7 million, or 31 cents a share, up from $6.6 million, or 12 cents a share, a year earlier. The latest results included a reduction of some valuation reserves worth a penny a share, while prior-year results had three cents in restructuring charges.
Sales climbed 14% to $366.4 million.
Analysts surveyed by Thomson Reuters expected a per-share profit of 26 cents on $349 million in revenue.
Raymond James analysts Budd Bugatch and Justin Santa Cruz really like what they see. Really, really, really.
We reaffirm our Strong Buy rating on LZB and increase our 12-month price target to $29.00 following the company strong operating results. Sales beat our estimates in each of the three segments, and operating income was better in two of three. Despite an uncertain consumer environment and difficult industry backdrop (traffic was latfor the period); La-Z Boy delivered robust sales growth and improved profitability. Same-store written sales for the 314 La-Z-Boy Furniture Galleries (97 company-owned) increased 9.8% y/y, above our 8.0% estimate, and on top of 13.3% growth in the prior year. La-Z-Boy seems likely to continue to benefit from an improving economy and consumer confidence as well as the housing recovery.
Shares of La-Z-Boy have gained 11% to $27.02 at 1:54 p.m. today. Its performance is also giving other furniture stocks a boost. Flexsteel (FLXS) has risen 1% to $27.60, Hooker Furniture (HOFT) has jumped 1.6% to $17.12 and Ethan Allen International (ETH) has advanced 1.2% to $29.20. Haverty Furniture (HVT) has dipped 0.3% to $27.87.

Shares of La-Z-Boy (LZB) have sunk in after-hours trading after the maker of reclining chairs reported disappointing earnings and revenue.
Associated PressLa-Z-Boy said it earned 32 cents a share, below analyst forecasts for 35 cents, on sales of $350.4 million, below estimates of $378.7 million.
What can you say about that? How about blaming the weather? Here’s CEO Kurt Darrow, from La-Z-Boy’s press release:
We believe the fundamental pace of our business and ability to improve our profitability on sales growth remains steady and unchanged. During the third quarter, however, weather conditions did have some impact on sales, production and deliveries. Moving forward, we are confident we have the right plan in place to grow the company through our 4-4-5 store strategy while enjoying the benefits of our lean manufacturing structure. At the same time, our integrated retail model is delivering results and our sales, merchandising and marketing teams are driving market share gains.
Investors aren’t buying it. La-Z-Boy’s stock has dropped 9.5% to $24.54 in after-hours trading after dropping 1.2% today.
