This is extremely important for Anthem (NYSE: ANTM  ) (formerly WellPoint) which was the big Obamacare enrollment winner last year and has banked its success on courting Medicaid expansion enrollees as well. Lululemon: Not Quite H(om)e Yet

What a year it’s been for Lululemon Athletica (LULU). The athletic-apparel and yoga-wear giant made headline after headline–for all the wrong reasons. It’s dealt with negative PR challenges. But that would all be noise if it weren’t for the fact that they’ve has a big impact on Lululemon’s business. So, naturally our burning questions have been: How big an impact and when will those issues go away?

Getty Images

We got some clues today after Lululemon reported earnings that made us snooze a little at the market open. For the period ended Feb. 2, earnings went sideways at $109.7 million or 75 cents, unchanged from last year's $109.4 million and 75 cents. Revenue rose to $521 million from $485.5 million a year prior. Analysts polled by FactSet had expected earnings of 72 cents a share on revenue of $515 million. Lululemon also said it expects to earn 31 to 33 cents per share in the first quarter, lower than the Wall Street consensus for 38 cents.

Top Managed Healthcare Companies To Invest In Right Now

On the conference call, the new CEO Laurent Potdevin said Lululemon has done some soul searching and plans to take steps to become a more inclusive brand.

"We've reflected on last year and we've learned from last year," he said. "We've done that with humility. If you go back to our mission, it's elevating the world to greatness. To do that well, we need to be inclusive."

Still, Lululemon’s shares have jumped 5.5% to $50.90, and left its competitors in the dust. Nike (NKE) has dropped 0.2% to $73.11, Under Armour (UA) has gained 0.7% to $114.42 and the Gap (GPS), whose Athleta brand competes head on with Lululemon, has risen 0.2% to $39.91.

Lululemon’s big gain didn't go unnoticed by one analyst. Brian Sozzi of Belus Capital Advisors writes:

Lululemon shares have popped in response. I would be hesitant to warp into a #LuluBull at the drop of a dime given the clear challenges facing the brand. The stock has acted favorably for a few reasons:

1.       Fourth-quarter 2013 same-store sales came in at the better part of the company's lowered guidance (-1% to -5%; actually -2%).

2.       First-quarter 2014 flat comp guidance implies quarter to date traction is being made in regaining customers, in spite of continued harsh weather impacting mall traffic.

Analyst Sam Poser of Sterne, Agee & Leach pointed to Lululemon’s low to mid-single digit same-store sales guidance to justify maintaining an Underperform rating. And Poser is still worried about the impact of the bad press on the Lululemon:

Product and supply chain issues will be resolved, but the value of Lululemon products come from the combination of great product and great in store experience. That combination has been damaged. Hence customers are looking to other brands that may offer a better value proposition.

Here's to hoping their lost customer base can meet Lululemon where they are in the future.

5 Best High Tech Stocks To Watch For 2014

There's a lot of red ink on Wall Street today after China took a bite out of the market's enthusiasm. The world's second-largest economy said GDP rose 7.7% in the first quarter, slowing from 7.9% in Q4 and falling short of economists' 8% estimate. Growth in China has helped drive global demand as the U.S. and Europe fight off economic struggles, so investors are more than a little concerned about the news. The Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJINDICES: ^DJI  ) sold off 1.19% as a result of the news, while the S&P 500 (SNPINDEX: ^GSPC  ) is down 1.73% today.

Caterpillar (NYSE: CAT  ) is taking the biggest hit on the Dow, crashing 3.1% today. The company relies on growth in emerging markets to grow sales, and China's GDP numbers will always affect the stock in the short term. A lot of this weakness is already priced into the stock, so it may not be bad for long-term investors. The company reports earnings next Monday, and estimates call for $1.44 per share in earnings, down from $2.37 a year ago.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Zacks Investment Research]

It is hard to find a good play in the Zacks Industry of mining non-ferrous metals, as the industry currently has a rank of 247 out of 261. In fact, in our five mining industries, there are only two No. 1-Ranked stocks: Brigus Gold (BRD) and Impala (IMPUY.PK). Both of these are in struggling industries, but they have proven to be best-in-class thanks to improving earnings estimates. Plus, both have seen their ranks surge from holds (or worse) up to strong buy territory, suggesting either of these names might be better picks than the struggling SCCO at this time.

Solar companies have reported losses for some time now, but LDK Solar has more debt than most companies, and won't be able to survive with such feeble numbers. At the end of 2012, debt stood at $2.8 billion, and we know now that the company ran out of cash just this week. There's no way LDK Solar can survive on just $135.9 million in quarterly revenue and that kind of debt level. A problem across solar High debt loads and feeble margins aren't a challenge faced by LDK Solar alone. Suntech Power gave in to these pressures last month, defaulting on its own debt. Yingli Green Energy (NYSE: YGE  ) is now the most indebted Chinese solar company, with $2.5 billion in debt, and I wouldn't doubt if they're not far behind LDK and Suntech. The defaults of Suntech and LDK has to be concerning for all of Chinese solar, especially if banks don't keep the free flow of funds that have powered a rapid expansion in production. Balance sheets matter
What's becoming clearer and clearer every quarter is that balance sheets matter, not just for investors, but also for solar installers. Solar modules come with warranties, sometimes stretching as long as 25 years, and if a customer questions whether a company will be around in only a year or two, they may choose another option. Since Chinese modules vary very little from a performance perspective, the customer may choose a better-capitalized company like JinkoSolar instead of Yingli or LDK, or even move to a U.S. company like First Solar (NASDAQ: FSLR  ) or SunPower (NASDAQ: SPWR  ) . As financial conditions get worse at these companies more and more customers leave and the problems get worse, creating a downward spiral. Analysis: Stop freaking out over $13B JPMorgan …

The size of the reported $13 billion settlement between the Justice Department and JPMorgan Chase commands awe and attention. It's also garnering a lot of criticism.

The New York Post portrays it as a kind of bank robbery. The Wall Street Journal describes it as the government "confiscating" half of JPMorgan's annual earnings to "appease . . . left-wing populist allies" of the Obama administration.

We still do not know all the details of the tentative settlement or the evidence the government has against the bank. But the initial outburst of horror at the $13 billion figure is very likely unwarranted and appears to be based on a fundamental misunderstanding of how damages should be assessed in cases of financial wrongdoing.

In the first place, any view about the unprecedented size of the fines needs to be balanced by the unprecedented size of JPMorgan.

The bank now has $2.4 trillion in assets. This means there are more opportunities for legal liabilities to arise and a need for larger fines to punish wrong-doing. A fine of a few million dollars — even several hundred million dollars — barely merits a footnote in a JPMorgan earnings report.

REALTY CHECK: How JPMorgan deal could curtail credit

VIDEO: Breaking down JPMorgan's settlement

CARNEY AND COX: NetNet's news roundup

In thinking about the size of the potential JPMorgan settlement, it's helpful to begin with the very basics.

Fines levied by the government should aim to deter undesirable behavior without over-deterring beneficial behavior. We want to avoid outright fraud and negligence without making it impossible for banks to offer mortgage securities to investors.

Top 10 Chemical Stocks To Watch Right Now

Many people worry that very large settlements could permanently disrupt the mortgage market.

Extreme fines could make playing the role of issuer just too risky for banks. Or, al! ternatively, the cost of investigating mortgage quality and compliance with representations and warranties required by investors (and, after the fact, by regulators) may simply be more than the market can bear.

But this is only one side of equation.

On the other side, there are the potential investors who need to know that banks are properly incentivized to live up to the promises they make when issuing mortgage-backed securities. That there is no room for "efficient fraud" or "efficient negligence" whereby the bank makes more by fraudulent or negligent issuance than loses through fines years later.

Large fines should convince investors that the market in mortgage-backed securities is safe enough to re-enter.

In other words, if we focus on the demand side, strict enforcement of promised credit standards in mortgage-backed securities could lead to looser credit and more mortgage finance availability. Investors will know that the system can be trusted.

Ideally, the fines for the negligence claims would be high enough to incentivize future issuers to properly investigate the underlying mortgages but not so high as to make issuance prohibitive because of possible legal liabilities. Which is to say, we'd want the fines to exceed to cost of undertaking an investigation into the loans multiplied by the odds of getting away with not investigating—and we'd want that number not to be so high that they make issuance completely uneconomical.

We do not, however, live in the ideal world. In the real world, there may be no actual middle ground on which regulators, investors and issuers can meet.

Fines large enough to convince investors that issuers will be well-behaved may be too large for issuers to bear. There may not be a market for the securitization of any but the safest mortgages.

That would mean that we either have to accept that the market for riskier-mortgages will be tighter for the foreseeable future or allow for continued subsidization of this market throug! h governm! ent guarantees.

Instead, however, everyone seems to want to pretend that we live in the ideal world where mortgages are safe, cheap and readily available so long as everyone follows the rules.

But assuming that the admittedly shocking size of the JPMorgan settlement is a sign that regulators are over-reaching is a mistake. In a world of multi-trillion dollar banks taking in scores of billions in revenue, effective deterrence comes with a high price tag.

The Opposite Of Spoiled: The Right Way To Teach Kids About Money

What's the best way to teach kids about money? That question has haunted folks for decades — maybe centuries. There are dozens of financial literacy programs in the United States right now, but none of them seems to be effective. Why is that?

I've written before about why I think financial literacy education fails. Here's the short version: Most financial literacy fails because it focuses too much on mechanics — how bonds work, the magic of compound interest — and not enough on behavior. While mechanics are key (they're the foundation, after all), they're not the most important aspect of financial success.

Here's an analogy: My brothers know how to read and write. They're smart guys, and they're both literate. But just because they know how to read and write doesn't mean they practice those skills. One of my brothers used to proudly declare, "I haven't read a book since high school." (Oh, how that hurt my book-loving heart!) Knowing how to read doesn't make you a reader. And knowing how to save doesn't make you a saver.

Financial literacy is not the answer. We've got to do something more if we want to teach our kids about money.

John Hancock
Recently, I've had two great conversations about this topic. The first was with John Hancock, the president of the Portland chapter of Junior Achievement, a non-profit group focused on helping kids learn about money and entrepreneurship. He and I met for coffee last week, and we chatted about his own efforts to improve financial literacy.

Tip: Teach children the importance of creating an emergency fund. You can even go so far as helping them open their own online savings account, or one with a local bank to get started.
Like me, Hancock thinks it's important to focus less on the "how to" and more on the "why" when it comes to money. He wants to change behavior. His goal isn't to just educate young people about money, but (as he puts it), "to change habits of the hands and habits of the heart".

Hancock thinks it's important to put people into active simulations, such as role-playing. To that end, his group puts on an annual event for kids called Biztown, which lets them experience a simulated city environment. The children take on the roles of various business and professional leaders in an interconnected community, and they learn how to manage their own personal finances. I know several kids who've done this program, and they love it. So do their parents. The experience seems to have a positive effect on their attitudes toward money.

The local chapter of Junior Achievement also produces The Money Jar, a weekly podcast about kids and money. (Last autumn, I appeared on an episode of this program to talk about how to build savings.)

I applaud Hancock's efforts, and hope to work with him in the future to improve financial education in our area.

Ron Lieber
Earlier this week, I had a long phone call with Ron Lieber, who writes the "Your Money" column for the New York Times. He's currently on sabbatical to write a book called The Opposite of Spoiled, in which he hopes to teach parents how to raise children with financial maturity. Note: This was the first time Lieber and I have ever connected, though we've been aware of each other for years. After all, I write the "Your Money" column for Entrepreneur magazine, and my first book was called Your Money: The Missing Manual.
Lieber has some great insights about financial education. "Financial literacy works best when it's delivered in the moment on an as-needed basis," he told me.

As an example, he talked about how sixteen- and seventeen-year-old kids make six-figure decisions about education with very little guidance. "The fact that these kids are making major financial decisions in complete ignorance is a crisis," Lieber said. "We need a financial Americorps to go into high schools and help kids address important questions. Why go to college? Why do different schools cost different amounts? How does financial aid work? What about delaying school for a year or two?"

Lieber agrees that financial literacy efforts have largely been ineffective. He says they should focus on "feelings, behavior, and emotion — all of the things we've realized over the past decade that are at the crux of getting money right." We talked about his book, and about raising children to be financially mature.

Note: Lieber is midway through writing The Opposite of Spoiled, and he's looking for more people to interview. If you have a great story about kids and money, he'd like to talk to you. Drop me a line, and I'll connect you.
"How do children become spoiled?" I asked.

"They're not born that way," he said. "We do it to them. Nobody wants to raise a spoiled child, yet it happens all the time."

One issue is what Lieber calls the "first-generation affluent". When you were raised poor (or lower middle-class), there's a real temptation to give your kids the things you never had. You remember what it was like to feel deprived, and you don't want your children to experience that — even if a little deprivation might be good for them, might build character. (After all, it helped make you who you are, right?) "Kids should, at the very least, have to earn things," Lieber says. In writing about spoiled children, Lieber tried to think of what it meant to be the opposite of spoiled. Because the word "spoiled" was originally used to describe food, the opposite is "fresh", which isn't a good choice in this case. "When we talk about spoiled children," Lieber told me, "the opposite qualities are modesty, patience, thrift, generosity, perspective, perseverance, courage, grit, bravery, prudence, and so on."

"That sounds like the boy scout law," I said. Lieber laughed. "Scouting imparts a core set of important values, it's true."

"The thing is," he continued, "you can use money as a central tool to teach kids about every single one of these. Instead of shying away from the topic, what if we put money at the center of family conversations? What if we assumed not that money subverts values but contributes to them? Because it does. This is the path to financial literacy and financial education."

Note: Lieber also loves the idea of opening a money store — some sort of business where folks can come in and get cheap, objective information about how to better manage their finances. He's done more research into the practicalities than I have. Neither one of us is actually ready to move forward with such a business, but we like the idea of it...

The Bottom Line As always happens with these discussion about financial literacy, I don't have any answers — only complaints. Over the past few months, I've chatted with Flexo from Consumerism Commentary. He want to start a financial literacy non-profit, and I want to help him make that a reality. But neither one of us really knows what that organization will look like and how it will accomplish its objectives.

I'm not sure we need to have the answers right now, though. Maybe it's enough to simply be asking the questions. I think that's the first step in finding a way to help children become masters of their financial futures.

Is Greatbatch's Cash Machine Shutting Down?

Although business headlines still tout earnings numbers, many investors have moved past net earnings as a measure of a company's economic output. That's because earnings are very often less trustworthy than cash flow, since earnings are more open to manipulation based on dubious judgment calls.

Earnings' unreliability is one of the reasons Foolish investors often flip straight past the income statement to check the cash flow statement. In general, by taking a close look at the cash moving in and out of the business, you can better understand whether the last batch of earnings brought money into the company, or merely disguised a cash gusher with a pretty headline.

Calling all cash flows
When you are trying to buy the market's best stocks, it's worth checking up on your companies' free cash flow once a quarter or so, to see whether it bears any relationship to the net income in the headlines. That's what we do with this series. Today, we're checking in on Greatbatch (NYSE: GB  ) , whose recent revenue and earnings are plotted below.

Source: S&P Capital IQ. Data is current as of last fully reported fiscal quarter. Dollar values in millions. FCF = free cash flow. FY = fiscal year. TTM = trailing 12 months.

Over the past 12 months, Greatbatch generated $19.7 million cash while it booked a net loss of $3.6 million. That means it turned 3.1% of its revenue into FCF. That sounds OK.

All cash is not equal
Unfortunately, the cash flow statement isn't immune from nonsense, either. That's why it pays to take a close look at the components of cash flow from operations, to make sure that the cash flows are of high quality. What does that mean? To me, it means they need to be real and replicable in the upcoming quarters, rather than being offset by continual cash outflows that don't appear on the income statement (such as major capital expenditures).

For instance, cash flow based on cash net income and adjustments for non-cash income-statement expenses (like depreciation) is generally favorable. An increase in cash flow based on stiffing your suppliers (by increasing accounts payable for the short term) or shortchanging Uncle Sam on taxes will come back to bite investors later. The same goes for decreasing accounts receivable; this is good to see, but it's ordinary in recessionary times, and you can only increase collections so much. Finally, adding stock-based compensation expense back to cash flows is questionable when a company hands out a lot of equity to employees and uses cash in later periods to buy back those shares.

Top 5 Warren Buffett Stocks To Invest In Right Now

So how does the cash flow at Greatbatch look? Take a peek at the chart below, which flags questionable cash flow sources with a red bar.

Source: S&P Capital IQ. Data is current as of last fully reported fiscal quarter. Dollar values in millions. TTM = trailing 12 months.

When I say "questionable cash flow sources," I mean items such as changes in taxes payable, tax benefits from stock options, and asset sales, among others. That's not to say that companies booking these as sources of cash flow are weak, or are engaging in any sort of wrongdoing, or that everything that comes up questionable in my graph is automatically bad news. But whenever a company is getting more than, say, 10% of its cash from operations from these dubious sources, investors ought to make sure to refer to the filings and dig in.

With questionable cash flows amounting to only -3.7% of operating cash flow, Greatbatch's cash flows look clean. Within the questionable cash flow figure plotted in the TTM period above, changes in taxes payable provided the biggest boost, at 52.5% of cash flow from operations. Overall, the biggest drag on FCF came from capital expenditures, which consumed 65.9% of cash from operations.

A Foolish final thought
Most investors don't keep tabs on their companies' cash flow. I think that's a mistake. If you take the time to read past the headlines and crack a filing now and then, you're in a much better position to spot potential trouble early. Better yet, you'll improve your odds of finding the underappreciated home-run stocks that provide the market's best returns.

I do feel sorry for analysts. It's a difficult profession to predict the future. After reading RBC's (RY) opinion on Nokia's (NOK) current quarter, I was not pleased. As a Nokia shareholder, I was interested in poking some holes into the piece written by Mark Sue. Since the analysis is only available to RBC investment account holders, I cannot provide a link that would enable you to read the whole document, but I will quote from some passages.

Then again, all-in bets like these are always risky. HTC loves Android, but the market doesn't love HTC back. LG sings the same sad song. And do I need to remind you how far Nokia (NYSE: NOK  ) has fallen since hitching its wagon to a single horse named Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT  ) Windows Phone 8? Becoming Mr. Softy's preferred partner was supposed to be a game-changing turnaround play for Nokia, but the Finns are still searching for the first sign of market traction.

Lloyds has several catalysts working in its favor. The bank has been busily disposing of assets that it views as non-core — the latest being a $1.45 billion ($1.37 billion U.S.) disposition of Australian operations to Aussie banking giant Westpac (WBK). In addition, Lloyds said it hopes to pay out as much as 70% of earnings as a dividend by 2016, which as a high-yield editor, has my full attention. This puts shares on a prospective yield for 2016 of more than 7% if earnings come in as projected.

More than a handful of international companies had strong performances over the past year. Australia-based Westpac Banking (NYSE: WBK  ) , for example, soared 54% -- and still yields a fat 5.4%. It's been hampered, though, by the slowdown in China, as China uses many commodities produced by Australia. Some worry about a housing slowdown hurting the company, too.

  • [By Fede Zaldua]

Most Australian banks seem to comply with (1) and (2). On the other hand, Australian banks have a loan to deposit ratio of 120% and around 9% of their funding is short term foreign funding. This means that their results shall be severely damaged by a steep depreciation of the local currency. A good example of a bank that is easy to short from the US (since it trades in the New York Stock Exchange) is the Westpac Banking Corporation (WBK). Westpac generates 90% of its revenues domestically and sells for 2014 13.1 times earnings and 2.1 times its 2014 expected book value. That said, there is one problem that you will find when you short Westpac's shares: The bank pays a +5% cash dividend yield.

Another stock that insiders are loading up on here is InnerWorkings (INWK), which is a provider of managed print and promotional procurement solutions to corporate clients across a range of industries. Insiders are buying this stock into significant weakness, since shares are off by 49% so far in 2013.

InnerWorkings has a market cap of $357 million and an enterprise value of $425 million. This stock trades at a fair valuation, with a trailing price-to-earnings of 23.20 and a forward price-to-earnings of 23.20. Its estimated growth rate for this year is -75.6%, and for next year it's pegged at 200%. This is not a cash-rich company, since the total cash position on its balance sheet is $19.22 million and its total debt is $91.50 million.

A beneficial owner just bought 32,000 shares, or about $214,000 worth of stock, at $6.69 to per share. That same beneficial owner also just bought 108,700 shares, or about $727,000 worth of stock, at $6.69 to $6.70 per share.

From a technical perspective, INWK is currently trending below both its 50-day and 200-day moving averages, which is bearish. This stock gapped down sharply in November from $9.75 to $5.54 a share with heavy downside volume. Following that gap down, shares of INWK have reversed its bearish trend and entered an uptrend, with the stock moving higher from its low of $5.54 to $7.21 a share. That move has now pushed shares of INWK within range of triggering a major breakout trade.

If you're bullish on INWK, then I would look for long-biased trades as long as this stock is trending above some key near-term support at $6.42 and then once it breaks out above some near-term overhead resistance levels at $7.07 to $7.21 a share with high volume. Look for a sustained move or close above those levels with volume that hits near or above its three-month average volume of 530,297 shares. If that breakout hits soon, then INWK will set up to re-fill some of its previous gap down zone from Novembe
